Bakari, Jessy, Sarabi & Dumi

Bakari

Species: African lion
Born: 2003
Comes from: German circus
Living arrangement: with Jessy, Sarabi and Dumi
Family: brother of Sarabi and Dumi. Father of Ayla.

In 2014 Bakari arrived at Stichting Leeuw, from a German circus. He is the proud leader of his pride. Bakari looks different from other males, because he doesn’t have manes; he lost them after being castrated. When he arrived at Stichting Leeuw, Bakari was supposed to have been sterilized. But soon after, his daughter Ayla was born. Since at Stichting Leeuw we have no intention of breeding big cats, and since Bakari caused much unrest amongst the other male lions, we decided to have Bakari castrated. He lost his manes, but it didn’t make him less masculine. His lionesses still have a lot of respect for him, and step aside when he enters.

Jessy

Species: African lion
Born: 2008
Comes from: German circus
Living arrangement: with Bakari, Sarabi and Dumi
Family: mother of Ayla

Jessy arrived in 2014 at Stichting Leeuw, from a German circus. She is the youngest of the pride, but highest in rank amongst the lionesses.
Jessy is also the mother of Ayla, who was born at Stichting Leeuw in 2014 – a welcome accident.
She is a smart and playful lioness. She is inquisitive and loves to hunt; she is in fact one of the best hunters at Stichting Leeuw! However, like a true lion, she also likes to just lie about.

Sarabi

Species: African lion
Born: 2004
Comes from: German circus
Living arrangement: with Bakari, Jessy and Dumi
Family: sister of Bakari and Dumi

Sarabi was welcomed at Stichting Leeuw in 2014, coming from a German circus.
Sarabi is second in rank amongst the lionesses. She is usually a calm lioness, but she is not to be messed with! When food is served, Sarabi is a fierce lady who makes it perfectly clear that everyone is to stay away. She regularly hunts and likes it a lot. She often seeks the company of the pride and loves to huddle together. Sarabi can be recognized by her dark fur.

Dumi

Species: African lion
Born: 2004
Comes from: German circus
Living arrangement: with Bakari, Jessy and Sarabi
Family: sister of Bakari and Sarabi

Dumi joined Stichting Leeuw in 2014, after a life in a German circus.
She is the lowest ranking lioness, a tad anxious but certainly fiery. When hunting she is also a bit cautious, but very keen when the prey is in sight. Dumi can easily be identified by the missing dark tail end. She loves the rest of the pride, often seeking their warmth and safety.
